Utafiti Elimu Tanzania (Swahili for Education Research Tanzania) is an annual evidence-into-policy forum bringing together collaborative planning efforts across the education system in Tanzania. Kwanza Tukule: Revolutionising Kenya’s Urban Food System

It’s 3am in Nairobi, many households are already up and have started their journey from the low-income settlements of Kangemi, Kawangware, Kibera, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Mukuru Kwa Reuben to Nairobi’s industrial area. Mostly on foot, trekking between 15-20km to make it on time, where they work as casual labourers on construction sites or industrial estates. They depend on daily wages, and in most cases, they access their main meal at lunchtime from the food vendors located outside the industrial parks.

Khadija Churchill Mohamed is one businesswoman who has defied all the odds to wake up early alongside these workers to provide safe and nutritious food options, such as nutritious boiled pulses, which she supplies to food vendors adjacent to the industrial parks.


Collective Approach for Adoption of Nutrient Enriched Crops in the Food System

Globally, there is a strong drive to enable food systems to provide nutritious solutions for all through dietary diversity. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are critical actors in ensuring food systems can provide better nutrition for all. Businesses need to be empowered to increase production and consumption of nutrient enriched crops to improve nutrition, health, and livelihoods and develop business investments in seed, crop and food value chains. 

SMEs – including seed producers, farmers, aggregators, and processors—are critical actors in ensuring access to food and nutrition security, particularly for the most vulnerable consumers.
